Owens River
Collins Road to Big Pine (HWY 168 Bridge)
Photos of paddle from June 21, 2009. Eastern Sierra Kayak and Canoe
Club's "Longest paddle of the year on the longest day of the year"
Three sets of photos, from 3 photographers, show the run for that day.
Roughly 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours paddle, with a 30 minute stop just below the class
II weir - weir is located about halfway along the route. Length is in
excess of 16 miles, and the last half contains a lot of sharp bends and turns.
Shorter kayaks work best alone this stretch of river.
Collins Road is a few miles south of Bishop, you could also put in for a
longer run from either Warm Springs Road (south of Bishop but just north of
Collins Road), or from Hwy 6 just northeast of Bishop (which would be a run of
over 30 miles).
For the put in at Collins Road, from US Hwy 365, turn east on Collins Road to
where it dead-ends on a short patch of dirt road - there is a loop at the end of
the road, so turning vehicles or short trailers is easy - just put in at the end
of the road.
