Death Valley Paddling
Lake Manly and Panamint Springs
For paddling Death Valley (which is 2-4 weeks per year, not
much more)..head down south from Furness Creek Inn, and head south along the
road to Bad Water. Head south about 5.2 miles from the turn off by the
Furness Creek Inn. You will reach West Side Road....head southwest for
about 1 mile and start looking for a put-in site. Take your oldest boat
here, as clean up is a chore - best to load a jerry can or two of "fresh" water
with you, so you can clean off your boat as soon as you pull her out of the
water (see photos at bottom of this page for an idea of what clean up is like if
you wait until next day! ).

The photos below show why you need to clean off your boat with clean, fresh
water, as soon as you take her out of the water in Death Valley. Salt and
mineral content is something else! Of course, all this "gunk" is the
reason for the borax works and other mining and mineral operations that were
once performed in Death Valley. Boat shown below is your very basic
rotomold kayak.

Within the hour, water from Lake Manly dries out to this :)

So....take a few jugs of fresh or tap water from home with you....

and if you clean her off right after take-out...you avoid this "look"...
