June Lake Loop
Some of our favorite lakes lie within a few short miles of each other.
Just north of the resort town of Mammoth, right off of US Hwy 395, is an area
known as the June Lake Loop. This is another resort area, popular in
summer for hiking, fishing, and boating. During winter, downhill skiers
can escape the weekend "freeway" atmosphere of Mammoth Mountain, and enjoy
Mammoth's sister property, June Mountain. The small town of June Lake
features cafes, bars, motels, lodges and camping (most campgrounds open Spring
to Late October). Unlike the much larger, and less isolated town of
Mammoth Lakes, there is an excellent chance that your cell service will not work
around June Lake.
Click on links to left of this page for photos of:
- June Lake - Namesake for the area. Pretty lake, along the shores
of the town. Two small marinas, several launch ramps around the lake.
- Gull Lake - Just to the west of June Lake. The smallest of the
lakes in this section, but the west and southern shorelines are very pretty.
There is a marina on the east shore, and a car-top put in on the west shore.
- Silver Lake - This Silver Lake is located a several mile drive to the
north-northwest of Gull Lake. Our favorite of the lot. That
said, camping is better at June and Gull Lakes if you are tenting. The
marina at the lake does have RV camping across the street from the lake.
Lake features a navigable creek that extends some distance, entered at the
southeast corner of the lake.
- Grant Lake - Largest of the four lakes, the only lake without speed
limits (read: lots of ski boats). Quite "barren" or desert-like in
sections.
