South Lake Tahoe
Location:
Getting There:
Camping/Lodging: Hotels, motels, and campgrounds almost the
entire lake.
Put-In/Take-Out: All over the place! Purchase a good
recreation map, of which many are available.
Good Points: Arguably the prettiest lake in the world. World
class hotels down to basic motels and camping. Outstanding restaurants to
fast food and everything in-between. And, on the Nevada side, casinos and
great entertainment. If it is winter, the paddling is perhaps WAY too
cold, but that is what all the ski slopes are for - head for the slopes!
Not-as-Good Points: Crowds, but lake is so large, it is still
magnificent anytime of the year. NOTE - cold water! Keep close to
shore, where water is shallow, if you want to be able to get to shore easily
after an upset.
Lake Size: Huge, one of the largest Alpine lakes in the world.
Beach area along the Southeastern shore of Lake Tahoe, within the City of
South Lake Tahoe.
Taylor Creek
Between Baldwin Beach and Camp Richardson, is the small inlet of Taylor
Creek. You can only paddle in a very short distance, not much beyond the
beach, but...does provide a nice picnic area. In October, salmon use this
creek to reach their breeding grounds - so there are times of the year to
perhaps steer clear. Further up the creek is an interpretive center, and a
"underwater" viewing area of the creek - worth a visit, easiest access is from
the main road coming out of South Lake Tahoe Hwy 89), opposite the Fallen Leaf
Road. Photos taken during July.
