Silver Lake

Location:  On the June Lake Loop, off Highway 395 via the village of June Lake

Getting There:  Just off US 395, very roughly 5 miles west/northwest of the town of June Lake.  From US 395 simply turn off on the June Lake Loop Road.  June Lake area is between Mammoth Lakes and Lee Vining.

Camping/Lodging: RV park at marina on North end of lake.  Campground just beyond north end of lake.  Lots of campground, B&B, and hotel options nearby at June Lake and Gull Lake.

Put-In/Take-Out: On west side of the lake, parking area on south, marina  resort and campground are on the northwest side of the lake.

Good Points: Magnificent scenery.  A fun "river" to paddle at south end of lake.  5mph speed limit, so no ski boats or PWC's, few wakes.

Not-as-Good Points:  Parking might be crowded midday during summer.

Lake Size:  About 80 acres, but "feels" bigger.

This first set of photos were taken during our kayak club paddle.  Eastern Sierra Kayak and Canoe Club, date was July 29, 2007.

Rush Creek - and yes, there is a turn here and we can go a lot further upstream!

This is one of our favorite paddling lakes in the Eastern Sierra.  Great views.  One the south side of the lake there is a "river" you can paddle for some distance.  You will be fighting a little bit of a current as you go "up" river.  To access, paddle over to the southeast corner of the lake, where you will see homes with docks.  This is the entrance to Rush Creek.  Rush Creek is feed by several other creeks, including Reverse Creek.  Well worth the effort to paddle this creek, portions have overhang, and a sort-of-vaguely mangrove feel.  Along the creek you may encounter other paddlers, along with others having fun just floating down the creek in plastic toys.  There are some areas where heavily loaded kayaks or canoes might bottom out, but there is generally one side of the channel that has sufficient water to pass (this was last checked in September, well after the higher waters one would expect with the spring thaw - in several of the photos showing this area the bottom is visible).

Parking Lot for picnic area, just off the June Loop Road, on Southwestern side of Silver Lake. Car top Put-in.

Restroom by the put-in, with put-in just beyond.
